Yikes...can you say genetically engineered Actually if those are real they must grow them in a container that makes them square. I believe it was the Japanese culture that use to bind the feet of women to keep them small so maybe they applied the technology to binding watermelons into squares! I agree with ohno666 it's kinda bizarre!

Dah...if only I'd read the article! LOL! To make it happen, farmers grew the melons in glass boxes and the fruit then naturally assumed the same shape. Today the cuboid watermelons are hand-picked and shipped all over Japan. Knowing they are only using a container to make them square makes them much more appealing to me. Actually they're made that way to easily fit in the fridge. That's a good thing!!! But the $85.00 price tag...not so good!

lol, i agree, it is kinda weird, and disturbing! and yeah, way too expensive! probably cause they have to break the container they grew it in,,, wait, glass isnt that expensive! hmm, probably the 'speciality' of it made it have such a price,,

Think of it this way...Necessity is the mother of invention! By creating very expensive square watermelons, they can ship more in a crate and people can fit them in the fridge with no problem! Not forgetting the fact that when you buy one of those big ole oblong watermelons they are heavy and awkward to get in the shopping cart, on the checkout counter, in your car, then in the fridge! Square works! It's all natural so it's good. Oh and think of how much easier it is to set upright on a plate for easy forking! LOL!
